Lankan-Tamils Issue: Actor Vijay Observes Fast With His Fans

In order to show their unity with Sri Lankan Tamils and also to protest against the unending Lankan civil war, an eight-hour fast was observed by top South Indian actor Vijay and his fan organizations on Sunday.

However, it was a silent protest with no inflammatory speeches.

Veteran director and Vijay’s father S A Chandrasekar inaugurated the agitation.

While speaking with the media people, Vijay said, “My fans have organized fast at 37 places across the State on Sunday. It is my effort to show my support for the ailing Tamils. I am happy and consider myself privileged to be part of the protest.”

The actor also said, “We can't go to Sri Lanka and fight for the cause. This is an attempt to show our support for them.” He hopes that there would soon be a ceasefire in the island nation.

Earlier last month also, Vijay joined a fast organized by the South Indian Film Artistes Association in the city over the same issue.

Ranjitha in the role of Vijay's mother

Ranjitha, the yesteryear heroine who was introduced by director Bharathiraja in Nadodi Thendral, is to play the role of Vijay's mother in the Prabhu Deva directed movie Villu.

Ranjitha, who made her debut in the early nineties (the same time when Vijay also started his career) has played heroine in many successful films including Sathyaraj's Amaithipadai.

After entering wedlock the actress switched over to small screens and acted in some serials including the successful one Roja. Now she is back to the big silver screen with a senior lady role.

In Villu, Vijay plays dual roles and Nayantara plays his lady love. The film is scheduled for Pongal 2009.

'Villu' - Shaping up fast

Shooting for the Vijay starrer 'Villu' is reportedly going on at a brisk pace. Directed by Prabhu Deva, the movie features Nayantara as the heroine.

The crew is currently in Tuticorin shooting some important sequences that include action scenes. Touted to be an action flick shot in a stylish manner by Prabhu Deva, the movie is produced in a grand manner by Ayngaran International and is expected for a release during Pongal.

Buzz is that the songs have been shot in a catchy manner by Prabhu Deva as he did in his earlier venture 'Pokkiri' with Vijay.

'Vijay fans can expect a thorough entertainer loaded with action and other commercial elements, said Prabhu Deva recently.

'Villu' is Vijay's 48th film and his next 'Vettaikkaran' is expected to go to the floors very soon.

Vijay plays twin roles in 'Villu'

Both Vijay and Prabhu Deva are trying to recreate the magic of 'Pokkiri' with their current film 'Villu'. While 'Pokkiri' was the remake of a Telugu film starring Mahesh Babu, 'Villu' reportedly is inspired by the Hindi film 'Soldier' that starred Bobby Deol and Preity Zinta.

Vijay will be seen playing a double role in the film (a father and son). The son who is the protagonist of the story would go all out to clear his dad's name from some malicious charges. While Nayantara would play the son's arm candy, yesteryear heroine Ranjitha has been roped in to play the wife of Vijay (Daddy).

Going by Vijay's films of late, 'Villu' will also have the exact proportions of action, songs, sentiments and larger-than-life heroism that is bound to win at the end.

The last time Vijay played a double role was for 'Azhagiya Tamizh Magan' which proved to be a damp squib at the box office. When 'Azhagiya Tamizh Magan' was released many reviewers felt that double roles are not meant for Vijay. Let's see if Vijay can prove them wrong with 'Villu'.

Vijay, fans observe fast over Sri Lankan Tamils issue

Chennai, Nov 16: Leading Tamil actor Vijay and his fans organisations on Sunday observed a eight-hour fast to express his solidarity for the cause of Sri Lankan Tamils in Chennai.

The eight-hour long agitation was inaugurated by Vijay's father and veteran director S A Chandrasekar.

Talking to reporters, Vijay said similar fast was being organised by his fans in 37 places across the state. "It is my effort to show my support for the suffering Tamils in Sri Lanka. I am happy and consider myself privileged to be part of the agitation".

Expressing confidence that the ceasefire would come soon in the island nation, Vijay said "we can't go to Sri Lanka and fight for the Tamils. This agitation is an attempt to show our strong support to them".

Film directors Perarasu, Selvabharathy and actor Mansoor Ali Khan also took part in the fast.

Vijay had also participated in the fast organised by the South Indian Film Artistes Association in the city last month over the same issue.

Rage among youth Tamil actor Vijay leads fast on Tamils issue

Vijy, who had earlier participated in the fast organised by the South Indian Artistes Association and later by the technicians of Tamil film industry, conducted the fast agitation today in deferernce to the wishes of his innumerable fans.

Speaking before launching the fast, Vijaya said reports coming in from Sri Lanka about the military offensive against the Tamils there were very disturbing. He demanded the Centre to take immediate steps to protect the Tamils.

As the Tamil areas were targetted in the military attack, the Indian government should prevail upon the Lankan government to declare a ceasefire immediately, the actor said.

While Vijay led the fast along with his fans and parents, his Director-father S A Chandrasekaran and write-mother Shoba near the Chepauk Guest house, his fans observed fast at various places in the state, including Tirunelveli, Tiruchirapalli, Pudukkottai, Madurai, Erode, Vellore and Dharmapuri Districts.

Though Vijay has been expressing his solidarity with the Lankan Tamils by participating in the agitations organised by the Tamil film industry, his fans wanted him to observe a fast separately to condemn the genocide against the Tamils.

The actor had recently unveiled a separate flag for his fan clubs in what was the first show of strengh of his fans.

Vijay, however, rejected a suggestion that the fast was a show of strength and a forerunner to his entry into state politics, to which the Tamil film industry has great affinity. Many leading personalities in Tamil cinema have been part of active politics of the state.

Those who participated in the fast, held placards, denouncing the attack on Tamils. They also displayed photographs of injured women and children in the attacks on Tamils in Lanka.

Meanwhile, a group of children in Erode also observed fast, demanding the Centre to ensure ceasefire in Lanka at Erode. In Virudhunagar, a section of Christians, after a mass prayer, observed fast for the cause of Lankan Tamils.
